Products Specifications

Φ6mm Grade1/TA1 Pure Titanium Bar

Overview

The Φ6mm Grade1/TA1 pure titanium bar is a cold-drawn, bright-finished small-diameter titanium rod engineered for precision applications requiring the highest level of formability among commercially pure titanium grades. Manufactured from Grade 1 industrial pure titanium (TA1 per GB/T 3620.1, equivalent to ASTM Grade 1 / UNS R50250), this bar carries titanium content above 99.5% with tightly controlled interstitial impurities, delivering the softest, most ductile TA1 pure titanium rod available.

Supplied as a bright-drawn bar with standard cut lengths of 1000 mm and 2000 mm, the Φ6mm diameter suits dental implant components, precision instrument shafts, titanium jewellery, and miniature medical screws, making it an ideal medical titanium bar for implantable and surgical applications. Custom cutting to shorter lengths is available for customers requiring near-net-shape blanks.

Material Specification and Chemical Composition

The Φ6mm TA1 pure titanium bar conforms to ASTM B348 and GB/T 2965-2023, the principal international standards for titanium and titanium alloy bars. The medical-grade variant additionally meets ASTM F67 and ISO 5832-2 requirements. Chemical composition is maintained within the following limits:

ElementTi (base)FeOCNHOther (total)
Requirement≥99.5%≤0.15%≤0.15%≤0.05%≤0.03%≤0.015%≤0.40%

The annealed microstructure consists of equiaxed alpha-phase in a hexagonal close-packed arrangement with controlled grain size. The low interstitial content ensures maximum ductility and cold-working capacity, allowing the bar to be machined, bent, and formed with minimal risk of cracking.

At Φ6mm diameter in the cold-drawn bright condition, the bar achieves dimensional tolerance of ±0.02 mm with a smooth, defect-free surface suitable for direct machining. The combination of low density, complete non-magnetism, and outstanding ductility makes it the material of choice for miniature precision components where ferrous and nickel-based alloys are too heavy, magnetic, or corrosion-prone.

Corrosion Resistance

Grade 1 titanium derives its corrosion immunity from a spontaneously regenerating TiO₂ passive surface oxide film, stable across a remarkably broad range of chemical environments:

Excellent resistance: seawater, salt spray, chloride solutions, nitric acid, acetic acid, citric acid and other organic acids, dilute alkalis at ambient temperature, humid industrial atmospheres, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorite solutions, food and pharmaceutical contact media. In seawater, the corrosion rate of TA1 is below 0.001 mm/year with no pitting or crevice corrosion.

Incompatible media (avoid): hydrofluoric acid (HF), hot concentrated hydrochloric acid, dilute sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, anhydrous dry chlorine gas, hot fuming nitric acid, molten strong alkalis.

Applications of Φ6mm TA1 Titanium Bar

The small diameter and exceptional material characteristics of the Φ6mm TA1 bar make it the preferred material for:

  • Dental implantology — implant abutments, dental screws, and precision posts where biocompatibility (ASTM F67 / ISO 5832-2 compliance), non-magnetism, and high ductility are mandatory.
  • Precision miniature shafts — non-magnetic instrument spindles for MRI-compatible devices, laboratory analytical equipment, and optical positioning stages where immunity to magnetic fields is critical.
  • Titanium jewellery and accessories — rings, bracelets, piercings, and decorative hardware leveraging the hypoallergenic nature, lightweight feel, and characteristic titanium lustre of Grade 1.
  • Miniature medical screws and fasteners — orthopaedic micro-screws, maxillofacial fixation devices, and small-diameter surgical instrument components manufactured to implant-grade material specifications.
  • Textile and industrial guide components — thread guides, yarn carriers, and small-diameter wear-resistant bars for textile machinery, leveraging titanium’s low friction and corrosion-free operation.

Fabrication Guidelines

Machining: Grade 1 titanium is relatively soft and tends to built-up edge on cutting tools. Use dedicated titanium-grade carbide or HSS-Co tooling, low cutting speeds (20–30 m/min for turning), positive rake geometry, and copious coolant. The Φ6mm diameter cold-drawn bar machines readily with proper tooling.

Cold forming: Outstanding formability — the bar accepts bending, heading, and cold upsetting with minimal risk of cracking due to the low interstitial content of Grade 1.

Welding: Excellent weldability using GTAW (TIG) with ER Ti-1 filler wire. Full argon shielding of the weld pool and adjacent surfaces is mandatory to prevent oxygen and hydrogen contamination.

Hot working: Processing temperature 800–900 °C under vacuum or argon atmosphere; mandatory inert gas protection to prevent high-temperature oxygen absorption and hydrogen embrittlement.

Annealing: 670–720 °C, hold 30–120 min, air cool under vacuum or inert gas protection. Commercially pure titanium cannot be quench-hardened; annealing serves to relieve cold-work stresses and restore full ductility.

Key Usage Precautions

  • Fluorine-containing media: Prohibit any contact with hydrofluoric acid or fluoride-bearing solutions; the oxide film fails rapidly, leading to accelerated corrosion.
  • High-temperature processing: All hot working and welding must be performed under argon protection; titanium reacts aggressively with atmospheric oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen above 400 °C.
  • Hydrogen embrittlement: For medical-grade applications, hydrogen content must be strictly controlled (≤0.015% as supplied; must not increase during processing). Use low-hydrogen welding consumables and inert shielding.
  • Galvanic corrosion: When assembling titanium bars with carbon steel or stainless steel components, fit insulating gaskets or isolation sleeves at all contact interfaces.
  • Cutting fluid selection: Use water-based coolants free of chlorinated additives for machining; avoid sulphurised cutting oils that may attack the titanium surface at elevated temperatures.
