Thermally cured 0.5 μm platinum coating on GR1 sintered titanium fiber felt, engineered as a cathode porous transport layer (PTL) and gas diffusion layer (GDL) for PEM water electrolyzers. The platinum layer suppresses TiO₂ passivation, delivers ultra-low interfacial contact resistance and adds auxiliary HER activity to extend MEA service life.

The 0.5 μm Platinum-Coated Titanium Felt solves the two persistent failure modes of bare titanium PTLs in PEM water electrolyzers — TiO₂ passivation and high interfacial contact resistance. A uniform, thermally cured platinum layer is applied to both sides of a high-purity GR1 sintered titanium fiber felt, suppressing the insulating oxide film and adding auxiliary HER catalytic activity at the cathode.

Why platinum-coated titanium felt?

Carbon paper GDLs oxidize and shed particles that poison PEM membranes; bare titanium felt passivates under high potential. Platinum-coated titanium felt combines the structural and corrosion advantages of titanium with the conductivity of platinum — a stable, low-resistance PTL/GDL that is reusable, regenerable and traceable.
