Products Specifications

Φ20mm Grade1/TA1 Pure Titanium Bar

Overview

The Φ20mm Grade1/TA1 pure titanium bar is a cold-finished titanium round bar that occupies the sweet spot between small-diameter precision components and medium structural shafts. Manufactured from industrial pure Grade 1 titanium (TA1 per GB/T 3620.1, ASTM Grade 1 / UNS R50250) with titanium above 99.5% and the lowest interstitial content of all commercially pure grades, it delivers the ultimate combination of corrosion resistance, ductility, and lightweight construction.

Stocked in three standard lengths — 1000 mm, 2000 mm, and 3000 mm — the cold-finished Φ20mm bar is the preferred material for chemical stirrer shafts, electrolysis electrode holders, aerospace lightweight non-load-bearing components, and general corrosion-proof machined parts requiring reliable mechanical performance in aggressive service environments, positioning this corrosion resistant titanium rod as a proven choice for chemical and electrochemical plant service.

Material Specification and Chemical Composition

The Φ20mm TA1 pure titanium bar conforms to ASTM B348 and GB/T 2965-2023, the prevailing international standards for titanium bar products. Chemical composition is maintained to the following limits:

ElementTi (base)FeOCNHOther (total)
Requirement≥99.5%≤0.15%≤0.15%≤0.05%≤0.03%≤0.015%≤0.40%

The fully annealed microstructure comprises equiaxed alpha phase in a hexagonal close-packed crystal arrangement, with grain size controlled for optimal balance of strength and ductility. The extremely low oxygen and iron content ensures the highest cold workability and the best machinability of the commercially pure titanium family.

At Φ20mm diameter in the cold-finished condition, the bar provides a robust cross-section for shaft and structural applications, with homogeneous mechanical properties from surface to centre. The cold-finished surface ensures consistent diameter tolerance and a clean appearance suitable for both functional and visible components.

Corrosion Resistance

Grade 1 titanium’s spontaneously regenerating TiO₂ passive film provides immunity to corrosion across an extraordinarily wide range of chemical media:

Excellent resistance: seawater and marine environments (corrosion rate <0.001 mm/year, zero pitting or crevice corrosion), chloride brines, nitric acid, acetic acid, citric acid, organic acids, dilute alkalis at ambient temperature, humid industrial atmospheres, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorite solutions, food and pharmaceutical process media.

Incompatible media (avoid): hydrofluoric acid (HF), hot concentrated hydrochloric acid, dilute sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, anhydrous dry chlorine gas, hot fuming nitric acid, molten strong alkalis.

Applications of Φ20mm TA1 Titanium Bar

The Φ20mm TA1 pure titanium rod is a practical engineering size for rotating equipment, electrochemical hardware, and lightweight structural components:

  • Chemical stirrer shafts — agitator shafts for batch and continuous stirred-tank reactors handling acids, solvents, and corrosive intermediates; the corrosion immunity eliminates the frequent shaft replacement associated with stainless steel.
  • Electrolysis electrode holders — electrode suspension rods, current-collector support bars, and cell-frame connectors in chlor-alkali, water electrolysis, and electro-winning operations where chloride-rich electrolytes attack conventional metals.
  • Aerospace lightweight non-load-bearing components — actuator rods, linkage pins, sensor mounts, and interior structural fittings where the 57% weight saving over stainless steel delivers payload and fuel-efficiency benefits.
  • Marine engineering components — propeller shaft sleeves, rudder stock bushings, through-hull fitting stems, and valve spindles for seawater piping systems on vessels and offshore platforms.
  • Pharmaceutical and food machinery — product-contact shafts, scraper bars, and agitator components for reactors, fermenters, and mixing vessels requiring USP Class VI and FDA-compliant materials.

Fabrication Guidelines

Machining: Use titanium-specific carbide inserts at low speed (20–30 m/min), high feed, positive rake, and ample non-chlorinated coolant. Sharp tooling prevents smearing and built-up edge on the soft Grade 1 surface.

Cold forming: Excellent cold formability; the Φ20mm bar accepts upset forging, heading, and bending with minimal risk of cracking. Anneal at 670–720 °C to relieve work hardening.

Welding: GTAW (TIG) with ER Ti-1 filler wire. Full argon shielding of the weld pool, HAZ, and root side is essential; without it, atmospheric contamination embrittles the joint.

Hot working: 800–900 °C under vacuum or argon atmosphere. Titanium reacts vigorously with oxygen and nitrogen above 400 °C, requiring fully inert working conditions.

Annealing: 670–720 °C, 30–120 min soak, air cool, in vacuum or inert gas. No quench-hardening effect; annealing restores ductility after cold work.

Key Usage Precautions

  • Fluorine-containing media: Avoid all contact with hydrofluoric acid and fluoride solutions; rapid oxide film failure leads to aggressive through-wall corrosion.
  • High-temperature processing: All processes above 400 °C require argon or vacuum protection; oxygen and nitrogen contamination causes irreversible embrittlement.
  • Hydrogen embrittlement: Monitor hydrogen levels in rotating shaft applications where cyclic fatigue loads are present; hydrogen pick-up during processing can initiate delayed cracking.
  • Galvanic corrosion protection: Use insulating gaskets, sleeves, or coatings when assembling titanium bars with dissimilar metals.
  • Cutting fluid selection: Chlorine-free water-based coolants only; halogenated and sulphur-bearing cutting oils are strictly prohibited.
